New Forest 24th May - 26th May

Welcome everyone to the New Forest Trip!


Hope you are looking forward to three days of hiking, canoeing and adventure in the stunning New Forest!


This trip pack has everything you need to know - What to bring, where to meet and what to expect. Any questions, please ask them in the trip Whats App group.

Itinerary

Saturday - Fritham Circular Walk

We will start the weekend with a beautiful circular walk from Studley Heath, passing through Coopers Hill, Ashley Cross, Alderhill Enclosure, Fritham Plain, and Irons Well. This rewarding route offers open views, tranquil woodlands, and historic spots. 


  • Distance: 13 km 
  • Elevation Gain: 126 m
  • Time: 3.5–4 hours 
  • Pace: Medium (4 km/hr) 
  • Hike Rating: 2/5 Moderate


After the walk we will head our accommodation to check in. Dinner will be in a local resturant or Pub.

Sunday - Morning Canoe/Kayak Adventure & Afternoon Hike

Morning: 

A guided river tour with the choice of canoe or kayak on the peaceful Beaulieu River—an unforgettable experience suitable for beginners and a highlight of the trip. All Equipment included.


Afternoon Walk: 

Brockenhurst & Roydon Circular  


Wander through picturesque countryside, starting in Brockenhurst and winding past Perrywood Enclosure, Dilton Gardens, Roydon Manor, and the ancient Roydon Woods.

  • Elevation Gain: 112 m 
  • Time: 3-3.5 hours 
  • Pace: Medium (4 km/hr) 
  • Hike Rating: 2/5 - Moderate


Lunch will be enjoyed on the go, and in the evening, we’ll regroup for a relaxed dinner in a nearby town.

Monday - Burley & Holmsley Circular Walk

Wrap up the weekend with a longer hike starting in Burley. Explore Burley New Enclosure, Ridley Wood, Vereley Hill, Castle Hill Fort, Church Moor, and Holmsley. This route combines peaceful woodlands, historical landmarks, and gorgeous views.


  • Distance: 16 km 
  • Elevation Gain: 210 m 
  • Time: 4–4.5 hours 
  • Pace: Medium (4 km/hr) 
  • Hike Rating: 2/5 - Moderate  


After the hike, we’ll say our goodbyes and begin the journey home, taking with us the memories of an unforgettable weekend. 

Accommodation

We’ll be staying at the YHA New Forest, nestled in tranquil grounds on the edge of Burley village. This comfortable hostel offers everything you need for a restful stay:  


• Shared Rooms & Shared Bathrooms: Cosy bunk beds with bedding provided (bring your own towels). 

• Self-Catering Kitchen & Dining Room: Fully equipped for meals/ lunch prep. 

• On-Site Licensed Bar & Restaurant 

• Communal spaces for relaxing. 

• Outdoor Grounds & Seating. 

• Amenities include Wi-Fi (can be intermittent), laundry facilities, and on-site parking (car sharing encouraged).

Payments

Thank you all for your deposit, the remaining balance is due by 12th April.


The Balance Due is £169.00

You will shortly receive an email with an invoice and payment link. A reminder will be sent 7 days before the due date.

  • Transportation - Where a drive is required to the start of a walk, participants typically arrange car shares amongst themselves.

Kit List

For Hiking:

  • Hiking boots
  • Hiking socks
  • Base layer/ T-shirts (dry wicking/ not cotton)
  • Lightweight fleece top
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Gloves / hat (even if it is warm!)
  • Rucksack
  • Water bottle (2 litres)
  • High calorie snacks
  • Lunches 
  • Head Torch (plus some spare batteries!)
  • Survival Bag & Whistle
  • Small personal first aid kit (Blister Plasters / personal medication as minimum)
  • Walking Poles (optional but recommended for uneven ground)
  • Sun cream 
  • Hat / Sunglasses


All of the above items are required unless stated as optional


For the Paddling


  • Clothing (comfortable clothing not denim or cotton)
  • Shoes (old trainers / water shoes - flip flops not suitable) you don't mind getting wet
  • Spare towel  / change of clothes


Rest of Trip


  • Cash - Some places / parking machines in this area do not accept cards
  • Please bring what you need for the evening/ sleep & toiletries/ personal medication.
  • Please bring a towel 
  • Optional  - eye mask / ear plugs


food

Breakfasts 


Breakfasts can either be made in the self catering kitchen or purchased from the accommodations restaurant. (Cooked or continental breakfasts are served from 7.30 am)


Lunches 


Please bring lunch for the first walk on Saturday.

Sun & Mon - Lunches can be prepared in the self catering kitchen.


There is plenty of room in the kitchen to store food for making your Breakfasts and Lunches. 

Please bring enough food for the trip -  the nearest shop is a drive away. 


Dinners 


Will be in local restaurants /Pubs or maybe a takeaway. We will do our best to cater for all dietary requirements. 


If you prefer not to join us for dinner, you are welcome to use the self-catering kitchen or purchase a meal from the on-site restaurant.

Guides: 

Our Walks are led by qualified walking leaders with Mountain Training UK and Outdoor First Aiders. The Canoeing is led by a qualified third party guide. 


Weather: 

We love the sun but if it is having a day off please be aware activities will still go ahead in the rain. However if conditions are unsafe, hikes are subject to change.


Hiking: 

Hikes on this trip are moderate level with some inclines and uneven ground.


You must be physically fit & well. You are responsible for your own health & safety and must be well enough to hike for 5+ hours.
