Choosing the right walk can make all the difference to your adventure. Our grading system helps you understand the level of challenge you can expect, based on distance, elevation gain, and terrain. Here’s everything you need to know:
What do the walk grades mean?
Our walks are graded from 1 (Easy) to 5 (Extreme) to help you pick the right adventure for your fitness level and experience.
Grade 1: Easy
What to Expect: Relaxed, leisurely walks on mostly flat or gently rolling terrain. Perfect for beginners or those wanting a gentle pace. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Grade 2: Moderate
What to Expect: A step up from easy walks, with a mix of flat and slightly hilly sections. Great for regular walkers who are comfortable with moderate distances and gentle climbs.
Grade 3: Challenging
What to Expect: Longer distances with sustained climbs and varied terrain. Suitable for walkers with good fitness and stamina who enjoy a more demanding adventure.
Grade 4: Tough
What to Expect: For experienced walkers. Expect steep hills, long distances, and rugged terrain. A high level of fitness is needed to handle the physical and mental challenge.
Grade 5: Extreme
What to Expect: Our most demanding walks, for highly experienced hikers with excellent fitness. These routes may include technical or exposed terrain, long days and significant elevation gains.
How do I choose the right walk for me?
Consider your current fitness level, walking experience, and how comfortable you are with hills and longer distances. If you’re unsure, start with a lower grade and work your way up as you gain confidence.
Do weather and terrain affect the difficulty?
Yes! Mud, wind, heat, cold and uneven terrain can make a walk feel more challenging than the grade suggests. We’ll always do our best to provide information about conditions before each walk.
What if I choose a walk that’s too challenging?
We encourage you to be honest about your fitness level when booking. If you’re unsure whether a walk is suitable, please contact us before booking, we’re happy to help you choose the right option. While our walks welcome a range of fitness levels, it’s essential that participants maintain the group’s pace to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. If you’re unable to do so, we may need to ask you to finish the walk early. This is never a decision we take lightly, so if you have any doubts, please reach out to us first.
